Deals largely with Aspinwall's years as a trader at the Crow Wing Chippewa Agency near Fort Ripley (1858-1866), the Indian trade, agency administration, annuity payments, Ojibwe reactions to the Dakota Conflict (1862), and the death of Ojibwe chief Hole-in-the-Day (1868). Also mentions Aspinwall's St. Anthony livery stable (1853-1855), a trip he made with George Bonga, an African-American trader, to Leech Lake and Pokegama Falls (1855), and a townsite claim at Wadena (1857-1858).
